# Why Dr. Joy Buolamwini's work matters for AI

_A correction and reflection on algorithmic justice and who builds AI systems._

:::

In the video, I undersold Dr. Joy Buolamwini by calling her "a researcher." I wanted to fix that here as she's an incredible voice in technology today.

Dr. Joy Buolamwini founded the The Algorithmic Justice League. When facial recognition couldn't see her face, she built the research that forced the whole industry to look. Her work is a big part of why I can make a video like this at all.

The fix was never better code. It's who's standing in the room when the code gets written. So I'm trying to be in the room and encourage others to do the same, grateful to the people like Dr. Buolamwini who held the door.
