Building a Librarian agent to unify nine-agent memory

How shared memory architecture solved the coordination problem in multi-agent systems.

View as .md

I love the British Library. Not just the building. The Librarians. So I built a Librarian agent who curates my full nine agent suite.

A great librarian does something quietly astonishing. They hold the whole collection in their head, know what connects to what, and hand you the one thing you did not know you needed.

So when I built a nine-agent system and hit the real problem, that was the shape I reached for. The problem was never the agents. It was memory. Without a shared one, nine agents are just nine strangers in the same building. The Editor pitches what the Scout already researched. Everyone starts from nothing every time.

I gave them one memory, split three ways. Fast reflexes in a database. Durable knowledge in a folder of plain text files I can read over the system's shoulder. And a Librarian agent to keep it.

Every night at 2am, it dreams. The Librarian gathers the whole cluttered day and tidies it. Deduplicates, clears the stale, and does the thing a real librarian does: it notices what each agent has been ignoring and quietly hands it back to them the next morning.

I set out to stop my agents repeating themselves. I ended up with the British Library's best trick running on a mini PC.
